Before signing a UAE employment contract, confirm the identity of the employer, position, work location, salary structure, working arrangements, probation, notice and benefits. The applicable employment regime should also be identified, because not every worker follows the same rules.
Start with the job offer and the legal employer
Check that the legal name of the employer, job title, work location and agreed terms match what was offered. The UAE Government’s employment guidance explains that the private-sector process generally includes a formal offer, signing the employment contract, a work permit and then the work visa. Do not assume that a commercial brand name is the same as the legal entity employing you.
Ten areas to check before signing
- Job title and duties. Make sure the role and the main responsibilities are described clearly. Ask for clarification if the wording is materially broader than the role discussed.
- Employer and work location. Confirm the correct legal entity, work location and any agreed remote, hybrid or travel arrangements.
- Salary breakdown. Check the total wage, basic salary, allowances, pay frequency, payment method and any commission or bonus conditions. Keep the written calculation of variable pay.
- Working hours and overtime. Confirm the stated schedule and how additional work, public holidays or shift patterns are addressed under the applicable regime.
- Probation and notice. Read the probation wording and notice provisions together. Ask how notice works on resignation, termination and any move to another employer.
- Leave and benefits. Check annual leave, sick leave, health insurance arrangements, travel benefits and any other benefit promised in writing.
- Term and renewal. Understand the contract duration, renewal process and any obligation to notify the other party before the end date.
- Confidentiality and intellectual property. Make sure the obligations are understood, particularly if you create work product, code, designs, business materials or client relationships.
- Non-compete or other restrictions. Read restrictions on competing work, solicitation, second employment or side projects and ask questions before accepting them.
- Policies and dispute routes. Check which policies are incorporated by reference, what document prevails if terms conflict, and which authority or legal regime is relevant.
What if the written contract differs from the offer?
Raise the difference before signing. Keep a copy of the offer and written discussion. The UAE Government explains that an employer cannot simply alter or replace the relevant provisions of an accepted offer without the required consent and approval processes under the applicable framework.
Do free zone employees follow the same rules?
Not always. Some employment categories and certain financial free zones can be governed by separate legislation or procedures. Identify the employer, licence, work location and governing regime rather than assuming every UAE employment relationship is identical.
Common questions
Should I sign and clarify the details later?
If a term is important to your decision, seek clarification before signing and ask for agreed changes to be recorded in writing. A later disagreement can be harder to resolve if the documents are unclear.
Which documents should I keep?
Keep the job offer, signed contract, amendments, policies referenced in the contract and written communications confirming important terms. Store them somewhere you can access after joining.
Can the employer ask me to sign another document?
Additional documents may address confidentiality, data, incentives or other terms. Read them together with the main contract and ask how they interact before agreeing.
